Thursday 6/30/11

                     Come out and watch The Broadway Show League play baseball at Heckscher field in Central Park this thursday and Every Thursday.  If you are a fan of Broadway and of Baseball, this Free event is a must.  See some of Broadway's Stars as well as other Broadway staff play Baseball.  Games are at 11:30AM, 1:30PM and
 
3:30PM.  Click on the above link for schedule and other information. The Heckscher ballfields are located at Central Park West from 61st to 63rd Streets in Manhattan.
                     Summer In The Square continues its Free weekly series, this thursday and Every Thursday from 7:00AM-7:00PM through 8/11/11, at South Plaza in Union Square Park.  There will be activities to enhance fitness such as running, yoga (including a mommy and me yoga class) and aerobics.  At 12:00 Noon, there will be a musical performance for the kids by "Little Groove".  At 4:30PM There will be performances from the Broadway hit Million Dollar Quartet.  At  5:15PM there will be a performance on stilts by the Shinbone Alley Stilt Band.  Finally at 6:00PM there will be a performance by The Aviation Orange.  Union Square is located between Broadway and Park Avenue South and between 14th and 17th Streets in Manhattan.
                     The Madison Square Kids Concert Series continues today with a performance by Audra Rox at 10:30AM on the Oval Lawn at Madison Square Park.  The park is located at Madison Avenue and 23rd Street in Manhattan.


                    The Central Astoria Independence Celebration takes place today from 7:30PM-10:00PM on Astoria Park Lawn in Astoria Park located at 21st Street, Hoyt Avenue and Ditmars Boulevard in Queens.  A waterfront concert will be performed by the Astoria Symphony, followed by a fireworks display by Grucci.  

                   Singer song writer, Julie Gold will be performing at The David Rubenstein Atrium at 8:30 PM. Admission is Free Every Thursday 8:30PM. The Atrium is located between 62nd Street and 65th Street and Columbus and Amsterdam Avenues in Manhattan.

                  The Madison Square Park Kids Concert Series/2011/06/09 continues today with Billy Kelly and the Blah Blah Blahs from 10:30AM-11:30AM.  The park is located between Broadway and Madison Avenue and East 23rd to East 26th Streets in Manhattan.
                  Free Kayaking at Franklin D Roosevelt Boardwalk and Beach at The South Beach Boardwalk at Ocean Avenue, in Staten Island, NY. (at the end of the boardwalk in parking lot 1) Kayaking is scheduled from 11:00AM-3:00PM.  Instruction and all equipment, including kayaks, life jackets etc, provided.  Life jackets must be worn.

                  Dance Under The Stars Tonight in Forest Park at Wallenberg Square located at Metropolitan Avenue and Park Lane South, Kew Gardens,(Queens), New York. There will be Free Music and Ballroom Dance Lessons.  The fun begins at 6:00PM and continues until 7:30pm.
                 Free and Low Cost Daytime Activities continue today in Bryant Park.  There is free Ping Pong available between the hours of 11:00AM-7:00PM.  The tables and all equipment are provided.  Chess and other board games including scrabble, backgammon and checkers are available for a Small Fee.  The parks carrousel or Le Carrousel as it is called, is open between the hours of 11:00PM-8:00PM.  It features French Cabaret Music and costs $2.00 per ride or $15.00 for 10 rides.  The park will also host Accordion Music between the hours of 12:30PM-2:30PM and Piano music during the same time slot of 12:30PM-2:20PM (probably in different sections of the park)  From 11:00AM-6:00PM, a popular european game called Petanque will be taught.
                 The HBO Bryant Park Summer Film Festival continues tonight with the Alfred Hitchcock thriller "The 39 Steps".  The lawn opens at 5:00PM for blanket and picnics.  The film will begin at Sunset between 8:00PM and 9:00PM.
                Prior to the film, Bryant Park will hostWord For Word Reel Talks: The 39 Steps with Scott Alderberg and special guest actors, producers and directors etc for a look behind the scenes of the summer film festival.  Bryant Park is located between 40th and 42nd Streets and 5th and 6th Avenues.

                    Friends OfFort Toten Park Family Fun Day located at Fort Toten Park in Queens at Toten Road to 15 Road.  Activities include games, crafts, medical screening, pet microchipping and various demonstrations.  This event is free and takes place from 12 Noon-3:00PM.
                   Schools Out For Summer Celebration at Bayswater Park located at Dwight Avenue and Seagirt Boulevard, Between Beach 38th Street and Bay 32 Street in Queens, NY.  There will be entertainment, games, petting Zoo, Refreshments and a book and bicycle giveaway.  The evnet takes place from 12 Noon- 3:00PM.

                   Second Annual Raritan Bay Festival will be held today from 12Noon-5:00PM at Conference House Park located at Pittsville Street and Hyland blvd, Surf and Richard Avenues, Staten Island NY. There will be music, crafts, Exhibitions, a petting zoo, nature walks along the beach and water rides.  The festival will begin with Hands Across The Sand at 12 Noon, a movement dedicated to a clean energy future in which participants on various beaches across the globe join hands in solidarity. 
                   Phil Rizzuto Park Family Day Will be held today from 2:00PM-6:00PM at Phil"Scooter" Rizzuto Park located between 125th and 127th Streets and Atlantic and 95th aves.  There will be music, face painting, arts and crafts, contests, games, inflatable rides, and community information.
                  The Summer stage Festival will be hosting a free concert tonight on its main stage with four different musical acts. Lee Fields, The Expressions, Fitz And The Tantrums, King, and Rich Medina will all be performing in one power packed show.  Enter the park on the East side either at 69th Street and 5th avenue or at 72 Street, manhattan.  Concert starts at 4:00PM
                  Celebrate Brooklyn will be hosting performances by The Heavy,  The London Souls and Superhuman Happiness.  Admission as always is by donation.  Concert starts at 7:00PM.  Gates open at 6:00PM.  Enter the park at 9th Street and Prospect Park West.
                  Rooftop films will be showing a documentary feature film entitled The Redemption Of General Butt Naked at its' open road rooftop, venue in the lower east side, at 350 Grand Street in Manhattan.  Tickets for the show are $10.00 online or at the door.  The doors open at 8:00PM, live music at 8:30PM.  The film will begin at 9:00PM.  Seating is limited and first come first served.  Guests are welcome to bring a blanket.  In case of rain, film will be shown indoors at same location.  There is also an after party at Fontana's located at 105 Eldridge Street, between Broome and Grand Street, in Manhattan.

                      In honor of the 150th anniversary of the start of the American Civil war, there will be an exhibition of photographs of New York Civil war soldiers taken by Dr  R.B Bontecou as well as quotations from the war time memoir of Walt Whitman.  Other images and memorabilia of the civil war are also featured. The Exhibition will take place at the Merchant House Museum located at 29 East 4th street in Manhattan. The hours of the exhibit are from 12:00 Noon - 5:00PM.
                           Join the Urban Park Rangers on a Walking Tour  of some of Central parks most beautiful and historic places.  The tour is scheduled to begin at 2:00PM and will last approximately 1 hour.  Meets at 72 Street and Central Park West at Strawberry Fields in Central Park, Manhattan.
                          Dancing Under The Stars tonight at Moore Homestead  Playground located at 45th avenue and 82nd Street in Astoria Queens.  Dancing and dance instruction offered, music and raffles.  Between the hours of  5:00PM-7:00PM.

                            The following is a list of NYC museums with free or discounted admissions on thursdays.
                            David Rubenstein Atrium AT Lincoln Center -Free admission every thursday 8:30PM and first saturday of every month 11:00AM.  There are musical performances in the atrium each thursday and first saturday.  Tonights performance is The Mighty Rail, a three man group combining elements of hip hop, violin and poetry.  The David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln center is located between west 62nd and 65th streets and Columbus and Amsterdam avenues in Manhattan.
                           The MUseum Of Arts And Design has a pay what you wish policy on Thursday from 6:00PM on (until closing which is 9:00PM).  Tonight there is a screening of The Man Who Fell To Earth starring David Bowie, scheduled for 7:00PM.  The museum of art and design is located at 2 Columbus Circle in Manhattan.
                           The Museum Of Chinese In America is Free every thursday all day. The museum is located at 215 Centre street in Manhattan.  Hours on thursday are from 11:00AM-9:00PM.
                           The New Museum Of Contemporary Art  is Free every thursday from 7:00PM on (until closing which is 9:00PM). The New Museum is also Free all the time for ages 18 and under.  The New Museum is located at 235 Bowery in Manhattan.
                          Here are some Free activities in NYC area parks.
                          Summer In The Square - Activities to encourage fitness - Begins with running at 7:00Am and continues with other activities such as Yoga and aerobics.  The days festivities end with musical performances in the square starting at 6:00PM.  This is a full day event starting at 7:00AM Until 7:00PM.  The event takes place at the South Plaza of Union Square Park.  The park is located between East 14th and 17th street and Broadway and 4th avenues in Manhattan.
                         Madison Square Kids Concerts presented by the Madison Park Conservancy will present a childrens concert performed by the musical act Hot Peas And Butter.  The concert is scheduled for 10:30AM-11:30AM.  The  concert will take place on the Oval Lawn in Madison Square Park located between east 23rd and east 26th streets and Broadway and Madison Avenues in Manhattan.

                            The New York Botanical Garden located at 2900 Southern Boulevard, N.Y is offering free grounds admissions all day every wednesday and on saturdays between the hours of 10:00AM - 12:00 noon.  This admission is for the grounds only.  It does not include admission to the Enid A Haupt Conservatory, The Everett children's adventure garden, special exhibits and the rock and native plant gardens.
                           Another Wednesday Deal is being offered at the Bronx Zoo located at 1040 Grand Concourse, Bronx N.Y.  Admission to the zoo is by donation, all day every wednesday.  
                           There will be a Free Yoga Class on the eastern lawn in Washington square park located at 5th avenue and Waverly Place, Manhattan at 9:00AM.
                           In Bryant park Chess And Other Board Games will be available between the hours of 11:00AM-7:00PM for a small fee.  Everything needed to play will be provided by the Marshall Chess Club.  In addition, free ping pong continues to be available daily in Bryant park.   The park is located between 5th and 6th avenues and west 40th and west 42nd street, in manhattan.
                           Food Vendors from all 5 boroughs will be showcasing their food items as part of the Taste Of Parks event to be held at the arsenal in central park between the hours of 11:00AM-2:00PM. The Arsenal is located at 64th street and 5th avenue.
                            Trolley tours are given atGreenwood Cemetery  every wednesday and the last sunday of every month at 1:00PM. Tickets are  $ 15.00 for the general public and $10.00 for members of the greenwood historic fund. This weeks trolley tour is called hidden gems of Green-wood.  There are three basic trolley tours that rotate.  Click on above link for descriptions of the various tours.
                          The Sppon River Project bring outdoor theater to Greenwood cemetery.  It tells the story of the fictional town of Spoon River and its dearly departed residents.  The setting couldn't be more perfect than sitting in the middle of a cemetery to watch the play.  Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door.  Greenwood cemetery is located at 500 25th street in Brooklyn NY
                          The Brooklyn Cyclones are playing at MCU field tonight vs The Aberdeen Ironbirds.  There will be Lunar Park Ride Pass giveaways to fans.  Game starts at 7:00PM.

                            The HBO/Bryant Park summer film festival kicks off the free monday night outdoor film series today with One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.  The film begins at sunset approximately 8:00PM-9:00PM.  Bryant park is located between 40th and 42nd street and 5th and 6th avenue.  Enter the lawn area at the 6th avenue side of park.  The lawn opens at 5:00PM .
                             Sunset Qigong classes will take place at Fort Tryon Park from 7:00PM-8:00PM today and every monday through August 15, 2011.  Fort tryon park is located between 192 street and dyckman street, Riverside Drive to Hudson river in manhattan.  The classes take place in the LindenTerrace area of the park.
                           The Brooklyn Cyclones will compete against the Aberdeen Ironbirds today at 7:00PM at MCU field.  Angel Pagan bobbleheads will be given to the first 3,000 fans that show up at the stadium.  In addition, every monday after home games,  the cyclones will be signing autographs for fans as part of a "meet the cyclones mondays" promotion.
                          The film Desperately Seeking Susan will be shown today,  as part of theRiver to River Festivals' elevated acre movie night series.  There are two shorts scheduled to precede the film.  DJ Ben Carlin will be playing music from 6:00PM-8;00PM. Films begin at sunset or approximately 8:00PM. This event is free but tickets are required.                            Celebrate fathers day at the Intrepid Museum located on pier 86 at 12th avenue and 46th street in Manhattan.  Fathers pay the price of a youth ticket with a coupon which can be found on the website. It brings together both professional and amateur cyclists.  There are children's races as well as adult men and women's races. The event will be televised on NYC life TV which is channel 22 on cablevision and 25 on most other media venues such as comcast, verizon fios and Time Warner Cable. First race begins at 12:00 noon.
                             Laugh on fathers day with Laughter In The Park, a free outdoor comedy series taking place on sundays at various parks throughout the summer.  On fathers day the show will take place at Holly Plaza in Washington square park located at west 4th street and Thompson street in Manhattan from 2:00 pm -4:00 PM
                           Have a snack on fathers day without breaking the bank.  Peanut Butter And Company  sandwich shop located at 240 Sullivan street in Manhattan is offering a dads eat for free deal on fathers day.  Reservations are recommended. 
                          Take dad out to the ball game. TheBrooklyn Cyclones are playing the Staten Island Yankees at MCU stadium at 5:00 PM on fathers day.  Kids get to run the bases after the game.  If You're looking for big league action there are still tickets left as of this posting for the Mets vs Angels game at 1:10 PM on fathers day, at Citi Field.

In the beginning or/my very first blog

                       This is my first attempt at blogging and I am looking forward to spreading the word about all the interesting and fun events in and around NYC.  There are numerous adventures to enjoy and I would like to bring you a few each week.
                       The Celebrate Brooklyn  concerts located at the prospect park bandshell, at prospect park west and 9th street, are in full swing.  On Thursday, June 16, 2011 at 7:00pm, the freedom rides project produced by Hal Willner and featuring among others, Rosanne Cash, Toshi Reagon and Steve Bernstein will be presented.  The show features music of the civil rights movement and celebrates the 50th anniversary of the freedom rides.  The performance is free but there is a $3.00 suggested donation.
                    On Friday, June 17 at 9:30pm, Coney Island Friday Night Fireworks Display begins.  The fireworks can be best viewed along the beach and boardwalk.  The free fireworks show will continue every Friday night at 9:30pm throughout the summer.
                    In addition enjoy Karaoke On The Boardwalk in front of Denos Wonder Wheel before and after the fireworks, starting at 7:00pm and continuing until 11:pm.
                    While we are on the subject of coney island, the annualMermaid Parade is scheduled to take place on June 18 at 2:00pm.  Its a wild and fun filled event featuring colorful costumes of mermaids and various other sea creatures, antique cars and marching bands.  Getting through the crowds that show up for the parade can be daunting but if you can get a good viewing spot, it is well worth it.  The parade route starts at west 21 street and surf avenue and proceeds down surf avenue towards west 10th street.         
                   Also on June 18,The Brooklyn Cyclones  play their first home game of the season against the Staten Island Yankees at 6:30pm at MCU park, located at 1904 surf avenue, Brooklyn NY.  The first 3,000 fans to arrive for the game will receive a schedule magnet.  the game will be followed by fireworks.
